The UK Government have made effective protest illegal. The Prisoner is a music video campaign, timed to be released as the next wave of climate campaigners are sentenced.

With governments increasingly cracking down on civil disobedience, this campaign seeks to use culture as an act of defiance. "The Prisoner", available now for pre-sales and released on Friday, May 9th, is a compelling and controversial music video addressing climate breakdown and the erosion of civil liberties under new legislation such as the Public Order Act 2023. The song features vocals from Brian Briggs (Stornoway), with an accompanying music video from independent media activists, Undercurrents.

By Purchasing and downloading 'The Prisoner for just 79p supporters can amplify a vital message: Climate campaigners are being criminalized while environmental destruction goes unchecked.

The campaign urges the public to harness the power of art and media as a form of direct action beyond restrictive protest laws.

Chris Packham said:

"Silencing the climate crisis by changing laws, imprisoning peaceful protestors and refusing to allow climate issues to be presented in front of juries will be seen by future generations as nothing less than state-sponsored criminality. Whilst the media still enjoy freedom of speech, creative campaigns like this play a vital role in campaigning for justice and the future well-being of our planet's ecosystems. Buy this song and let's get it to number 1 in the UK charts to send a message that we will not be silenced. Silence is not safety and culture is not quiet."

Quotes from RYADER:

"The future is on trial."
"Silence is deadly"

"Protest is the mother of progress."
"No right to say no = no rights at all."
"Small change can make big changes."

The Public Order Act 2003 brought in new criminal offences and higher fines for protesters for actions such as “locking- on” — where protesters cling to a place or object — and disruptive slow marching. Jailed climate campaigners range in age from 21 to 78 years.

Jodi Beck, head of policy and campaigns at the British human rights organisation Liberty, said the laws “underpin inflammatory political rhetoric around the climate movement and racial justice movement,” and “strike at the heart of how we protest.”

Juries have found many protesters not guilty after they presented climate facts to the court as their motivation for their actions. In response to this the Judge in the recent Just Stop Oil trial banned using the climate emergency as an admissible defence — meaning jurors were not allowed to take the defendants’ “political and philosophical” motivations into consideration when deliberating. .

So far the UK Government has jailed hundreds of these political prisoners: Citizens willing to take action to secure a future for the planet.

The following trials are due in may:

9 May, Southwark Crown Court: Ian Bates, Abigail Percy-Ratcliffe

15 May, Southwark Crown Court: Phoebe Plummer, Amy-Rose Friel O’Donnell, Aaron Gunning, David Mann

16 May, Isleworth Crown Court: Adam Beard, Sally Davidson (Bells), Luke Elson, Will Goldring, Rosa Hicks, Sean O’Callaghan, Hannah Schafer, Luke Watson, Rory Wilson

23 May, Manchester Crown Court: Daniel Knorr, Margaret Reid, Indigo Rumbelow, Ella Ward
